Case Study

Maintaining an Aging Mobile Crane Inventory

Equipment

Mobile cranes of all types, including Link-Belt, Grove, Manitowoc and P&H.

Challenge:

After being awarded a contract from a long standing incumbent, our team quickly discovered that the fleet of mobile cranes had received only minimal maintenance for many years.

The combination of age and neglect meant the equipment required far more attention than anticipated to bring it back to safe and compliant operating conditions.

Solution:

We collaborated closely with end users and the Contracting Officer’s Representative (COR) to ensure timely communication, provide transparent repair reporting, and inform prioritization decisions. This approach ensured that repairs were addressed in a way that balanced safety, compliance, and mission readiness—the three non-negotiables of Department of War crane operations.

Results:

The result is a fleet that is more available and mission-ready than ever before, with end users able to perform their critical testing missions with confidence.

Just as importantly, the customer is now armed with the knowledge to more efficiently manage the fleet and plan for mobile crane replacements—turning a history of neglect into a roadmap for sustained readiness.

FAQ

What does a mobile crane inspection include?

Our inspections cover the entire crane system — structural, mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and vehicle components. This includes booms, hoists, wire ropes, hooks, brakes, tires, axles, wheel bearings, diesel engines, generators, DC control systems, hydraulic hoses, and boom cylinders.

How often should mobile cranes be inspected?

Inspection frequency depends on OEM recommendations, operating conditions, and regulatory requirements (e.g., OSHA, FMCSA, and DOD standards). Most cranes require at least annual inspections, with additional checks after heavy use or unusual events.

Are your technicians certified for mobile crane inspections?

Yes. Our technicians are OEM-trained and certified through manufacturers such as Link-Belt, Manitowoc, Grove, and Liebherr. They also hold additional qualifications in diesel mechanics, hydraulics, heavy equipment, and EPA-certified refrigerant handling.

Do you inspect both the crane and the vehicle it’s mounted on?

Yes. Mobile crane inspections include the “upper works” (crane structure, hoists, hydraulics, controls) and the “lower works” (truck or crawler body, brakes, tires, drivetrain) to ensure complete safety and compliance

Can you perform maintenance during an inspection?

Yes. Preventive maintenance such as lubrication, hydraulic hose replacement, brake servicing, and fluid changes can be performed alongside inspections to minimize downtime.

What maintenance services do you provide for mobile cranes?

We handle preventive and corrective maintenance, fluid and lubrication services, major disassembly (such as brake overhauls and boom cylinder rebuilds), and load testing to verify safe operation.

Do you follow government and DOD standards for inspections?

Yes. We specialise in supporting DOD operations and ensure all inspections and maintenance meet applicable military, OEM, FMCSA, and OSHA requirements.

Can you overhaul older mobile cranes?

Yes. We perform overhauls to restore cranes to safe operating condition, which may include replacing tires, wheel bearings, hydraulic hoses, control systems, and boom cylinders. We also rebuild components when it is cost-effective.

Do you offer consultation on mobile crane selection or maintenance programs?

Yes. We advise on equipment selection, fleet maintenance planning, and program implementation to help you manage costs, compliance, and readiness.

Why choose Craneworks for mobile crane inspections and maintenance?

We combine multi-discipline expertise (crane, diesel, hydraulic, and electrical systems) with OEM training, deep government/military experience, and a commitment to safety and reliability. Our high standards help prevent accidents, extend crane life, and ensure mission readiness.
