FAQ
When should a mobile crane be overhauled?
Overhauls are typically needed when regular maintenance has been neglected, major components are failing, or the crane has reached the midlife stage (usually 10–15 years). Some Army and Navy cranes are kept 30–40 years, which makes overhauls essential to keep them in service.
What does an overhaul usually include?
Typical overhaul work involves replacing wheel bearings, wheels, and tires, restoring hydraulic systems and hoses, rebuilding or replacing boom cylinders, performing full OEM brake disassemblies, and repairing or replacing structural and mechanical components.
Why overhaul the crane instead of replacing it?
Overhauls extend the life of existing cranes at a fraction of the cost of replacement, which can run into the millions. By targeting only worn or outdated systems, customers reduce downtime and save significantly while maintaining compliance and safety.
How long does an overhaul take?
Timelines vary depending on the crane size and scope of work. Smaller system overhauls may take weeks, while large cranes with extensive hydraulic or structural repairs can require several months.
What certifications do Craneworks technicians have?
Our technicians are factory-trained and vendor-certified on major crane brands, as well as OSHA- and DOD-certified. They specialize exclusively in mobile cranes, with deep training in hydraulics, truck mechanics, and crane systems.
What is the typical service life of a mobile crane?
Most mobile cranes are designed for a service life of 15–20 years. However, with expert overhauls and proper maintenance, they can be safely extended—some DOD cranes in operation today are 30–40 years old.
What’s the value of choosing Craneworks for an overhaul?
We combine deep expertise, DOD-level compliance, and vendor partnerships to deliver cost-efficient overhauls. Our scale and experience allow us to fabricate or source rare parts, restore performance, and keep cranes mission-ready even when they’re decades old.
