Case Study: Supplying Commercially Available, Navy-Compliant Hoists and Cranes
Challenge: Navy facilities frequently require replacement hoists, trolleys, and bridge cranes that meet Navy standards, including the NAVFAC P-307 and Navy Crane Center (NCC) Design Instruction 11450.2A. However, most commercial manufacturers design equipment for the industrial market, rather than specifically for Navy certification.
When a Navy activity purchases commercial hoisting equipment directly, the process often stalls:
- Drawings and specifications lack the technical detail required for NCC review
- Modifications for compliance are unclear, not documented and not procured
- The government must submit a Crane Alteration Request (CAR) before the new equipment can be certified, a process that depends on compliant technical data that OEMs rarely provide.
This gap can cause months of delay between equipment delivery and crane certification.
Solution: Craneworks bridges this commercial-to-military gap by supplying commercially available Navy-compliant equipment packages—ready for installation and certification.
Step 1: Vendor Coordination
Craneworks partners directly with OEMs such as Columbus McKinnon and Acco Wright to obtain detailed design data, materials specifications, and control schematics. We review all documentation to identify where additional information or configuration changes are needed for Navy compliance.
Step 2: Compliance Engineering
Our engineering team evaluates each component against NAVFAC P-307 and NCC technical requirements. We then:
- Add or specify required safety and identification features
- Generate compliance drawings and documentation
- Prepare the CAR package on behalf of the Navy activity.
Step 3: CAR Approval Support
Craneworks submits the CAR and supporting documentation to the Navy Crane Center (NCC) for review and approval. We coordinate with the Certifying Official and Engineering Support Division Group (ESDG) to ensure the package meets all technical and administrative requirements for certification.
Step 4: Delivery and Certification
Once approved, Craneworks delivers the compliant hoist or crane assembly and provides field support during installation and commissioning. The Certifying Official receives a complete documentation package, ensuring the equipment can be immediately certified and placed into service.
Results:
- Faster Project Turnaround – Navy activities avoid the multi-month delays typically caused by incomplete OEM documentation.
- Guaranteed Compliance – Equipment is fully aligned with NAVFAC and NCC standards, ready for certification.
- Vendor Flexibility – Facilities can continue sourcing trusted brands like CM and Acco Wright while meeting all Navy technical requirements.
- Reduced Administrative Burden – Craneworks manages the CAR submittal and approval process end-to-end, freeing government personnel from complex coordination tasks.
Why It Matters: This approach provides Navy customers with the best of both worlds: the performance and reliability of commercial hoisting equipment, along with the assurance that every installation is compliant, approved, and certifiable.
By combining technical expertise, contracting knowledge, and vendor relationships, Craneworks ensures that commercial equipment becomes Navy-ready equipment—safely, efficiently, and without unnecessary delays.

FAQ
Do you manufacture hoists?
We primarily use commercial off-the-shelf hoists from leading OEMs (Columbus McKinnon, Yale, ACO, TC American, etc.), then design and integrate them into a system that meets strict DoD and OEM standards. In some cases, we fabricate supporting components in-house.
Why is integration important for hoist systems?
A hoist alone doesn’t guarantee safety or performance. Integration ensures that the hoist, control systems, power supply, and structural components work together seamlessly, delivering reliability, efficiency, and compliance with OSHA, ASME, and military requirements.
Can you design hoist systems for military use?
Yes. We specialize in adapting commercial hoists to meet Army and Navy specifications, which often include additional safety redundancies (like dual braking systems). This makes us a trusted partner for mission-critical applications.
How do you ensure compliance in hoist design?
Our engineers prepare comprehensive design packages that include drawings, calculations, specifications, and certification documents. These packages are built around OEM manuals, DoD standards, and ASME B30 requirements so that every hoist is certifiable and mission-ready.
What makes Craneworks different in hoist design and integration?
Unlike general vendors, we combine engineering expertise, DoD certification, and field experience. We don’t just deliver equipment — we deliver a complete, certifiable hoist system backed by inspection, maintenance, and lifecycle support.
